Smiles of the Shadows is a story revolving around Cerys, the main protagonist, who has gotten wrapped up in an organization that exploits her power for their own gain. Her roommate and protentional love-interest, Amylah, is a private investigator that is charged with the task to track down this specific organization. Cerys takes on a mission to slow her down, only to realize it's her roommate. Amylah, completely unaware that Cerys is the one she's going against, seeks constant condolement. Eventually Amylah puts the pieces together as each of her plans keep falling flat and there's a noticeable rift between the two. She takes one more step for her own, but she doesn't realize it'll be her demise.
Months later, Cerys is still haunted by the death of her roommate but is forced to take on an apprentice under the agency. She still believes she's the one in the right here. Her apprentice is a young teenager by the name of Orion who struggles with an unstable family life on top of trying to transition. They grow close, Cerys even starting to see him as a younger sibling, until Orion stumbles across the real intentions behind the agency and tries to show it to Cerys. Cerys, too stubborn to realize she's on the wrong side, lashes out and nearly kills him too.
